My Stag seems to be running well with its Strombergs but it all seems very complicated and convoluted. I am thinking about changes to a Stagwebber webber conversion to replace the Strombergs. Or should I look at a Holley

Couple of questions;

Does anyone have any preference either way?

Which one is simpler to do?

How do they affect fuel consumptions?

How do they affect power?

Do they sound any different?

As you can see I am weighing up the pros and cons. In an ideal world I buy the kit and it swaps over in a couple of hours bob's your uncle?

I mean, seriously? You actually think a webber or holley is simpler than strombergs? Weird!

If it's running well as Triumph intended then leave it alone. Meddling will only bring trouble.

As Rob says, why, especially if it is running fine?
Strombergs are fairly simple carbs and setting them up is not at all a difficult thing to do as long as you follow the workshop manual.
It may look complicated but it is set out step by step.  Once set up , they also hold their tune for a long time -  some argue longer than most carbs.

The Holley is a much simpler carby to work on than those  horrible strombergs that you poms seem to be besotted with More power better throttle response.But they have their issues .I actually prefer the edelbrock  to anything else  .No fuel leaks as there aren't any gaskets below fuel level.Bolt on straight out of the box .Electric or manual choke .4 barrel size to suit the 3 litre. Economy plus no cold start problems or hot weather vaporising.Needles .jets and vacuum horns all easy to change if you want to play ,but i have fitted these to many v8s and havent had to bother with tuning as they made everything else look so old hat.    Dare to be different and you wont regret it.They are quite cheap too and made by weber.
By the way just to qualify myself i have owned over 85 cars and many of them English as i grew up i NZ ,im also a mechanic with 45 years experience.My belief is that you can always improve on the way it was made as they were all made to a budget and compromise.

Try the edelbrock mate you wont regret it.If you look at  Stagnl and his  list of mods to  the  stag ,you will see that they are quite extensive yet he advocates keeping the crap strombergs .

Stick to the Strommies. Both the alternatives will cause crankcase breathing problems that you never knew you had, then you are in the world of oil peeing out everywhere, pcv's and catch tanks. 38 Weber has smaller intakes and Holley much bigger than Strommies. Noisy sucking intakes.

Believe me learning how to adjust Strommies is far easier than sorting the side effects of these so called simple carbs.

Fitting a kit is the start of your problems.

IMHO Get the Holley .

There are now PCV kits (or other measures) out there to get around the issues in addition to improving what Triumph did back in the day.

I had a Holley from Monarch on mine and TBH it was great.  It still did around 30MPG on a run to London and back and it had quite a few ponies.  It was easier to start and it didn't suffer from diaphragms splitting or the engine flooding.

Being brand new (IMO I wouldn't do it any other way, read on) you also cut out vacuum leaks, something that plagues Strommies and SUs unless they are rebuilt correctly ; simply replacing the throttle shafts does not cure the leaks ; I know I've bought a couple of cars with new shafts but with monumentally shot bushes.

In the 3 years I had the Stag the carb was one thing I never touched again with a 5,000 miles or so being covered around a year.

I will admit that looking into the sorting out the breathing may well be worth your while.

I wonder how many people above have actually used the Holley setup or gone off secondary information.

When I was looking alot of the issues seemed to come from people buying other people's mess (i.e secodhand carbs and linkages, and expecting them to work perfectly).

Ex Stag TV8, Dolly Sprint and Spitfire 1500 owned.

I read this thread with great interest as the Strommies on my 160k mile Stag are knackered.  The cost of rebuild/replacement is not vastly different to the cost of a new Stagweber conversion. The claims of no worse power delivery but better fuel economy do tempt me. However I do not want to spend a big chunk of money and end up being disappointed with the end result as has happened with some of my past upgrades!

Edelbrooks do not seem to be common in the UK?

Rebuilt Strommies will cost you far less and work well. If you go the Weber route, you will have to add on cost of air filter and probably breather kit which may not work on your engine if it is breathing heavily. Not a problem you encounter with the Strommies. I never had better economy. Initial take off seems good as linkage is tuned to give a large throttle opening with small pedal movement, giving the impression of better performance. In fact the choke sizes are smaller than Strommies. All IMHO of course.

Agreed. Holley is good. And no issues, At least with the carb.

Strombergs and SU's are fine, but really do blunt performance. I still remember the day i removed the SU's off my sprint and bolted on a set of webers. Why i didn't do it before, i really dont know.

I fitted a Stagweber to my Stag after endless problems trying to get it to run properly with the original carbs. During fitting of the Weber I found a fractured stud which was probably drawing air and upsetting the existing setup.

The Stagweber was great by comparison but I absolutely hated the induction roar from the air filter I had specified and there was little or no performance benefit. I eventually picked up a deal on refurbished standard carbs and I am much happier being back to standard spec, and sound.

If anyone is interested in a full Stagweber kit that has done under 600 miles please pm me.
