Hello,

Trying to fit new hoses to my Spit and having real problems getting a watertight seal on the lower radiator hose.

The hose seems just too short/at the wrong angle and no matter how tight I try to get the jubilee clip the water just pours out at the bottom connection to the radiator, plus there seems to be hardly any clearance on the engine mounting.
In desperation, although mine's a 1300, I bought a 1500 hose from Moss to see if that's any better. Slightly improved fit as it's longer, but still the same issues on angles/general fit.

I've upgraded to the wider radiator so wonder if this is causing the fitment issue?

Anyone else had similar issues or got any helpful advice?

I'm rather embarrassed to be struggling on something that should be so simple!

Is the metal tube (on the radiator) perfectly round? Slightly off-round will cause a problem getting a decent seal.

We used a silicon hose with Mikalor clamps as they are far more superior than cheap jubilee clamps
Mikalor`s, tighter than a Yorkshire mans wallet

Do you have a genuine stanpart wide rad or aftermarket. I run a 1500 engine with the genuine mk2 radiator with no issues in a mk2. The mk2 1147 1300 and 1500 lower rad hose are the same

Thanks for the responses

The radiator is an aftermarket one that I got from Moss when they were on offer a while back.

Thanks for the tip on the Mykalor clamps. I'll get some off Flea Bay and hopefully give it another try this weekend.

Once upon a time I had a Morris Tasman.....not seen in your part of the world, an Aussie sort of 1800 with an overhead cam motor.
Anyway I had a similar leak problem with the top hose. In the end I found a badly soldered joint between top tank and pipe. Removed it, cleaned it up and resoldered it .No further leaks.
Wonder if you have a similar problem.

I'll have a check on the solder this weekend, but it seems to be more due to the angle that the hose is meeting the pipe at the bottom of the radiator. It's not coming straight on and in line with the pipe so the end of the hose is at an angle and there is a 'lip' that doesn't seem to close despite my best efforts.

Funny you mention the Tasmin. I'm aware of it because my brother has imported an Austin 1800 Ute from Australia that he's just doing up at the moment. The Ute was the pick up version of the Austin 1800 and was only made in Oz. I think the Tasmin and his 1800 share a lot of similar parts and some of the Ute parts (eg brakes) are specific to Oz production and not shared with the UK made 1800's. Small world!
