2.5 engine

When engine cold nothing in any gear at any rev
When up to temp no pinking at low revs in any gear when throttle pressed however hard
If I'm doing 60 ish or a tad more and if I give it full throttle and hold it I appear to have pinking, back of the go pedal and the pinking stops
So high end/rev pinking :- what causes this and how do I sort it

I only use "super" petrol and normally BP

Dave your ignition timing might be a bit to far advanced, or the fuel mixture could be a bit weak

Iggy beat me to it - weak mixture.
Does your 2.5 run on carbs,  Lucas Pi or modern EFI witchcraft?

Pi tends to run lean at the top of rev range, so should be SRT a bit rich at idle etc.
The details are in the Lucas Pi manual, but you might do best to send the Metering Unit to one of the specialists to be recalibrated.
Prestige and the other one have calibration rigs,   just tell them about your engine and how you will use it and it'll come back perfect!
If carbs, set them a bit richer, if EFI ditto, at the high revs where you're going weak.

Sounds slightly similar to my pinking issue Dave - I solved mine by knocking the advance back a touch.

Dave,
One flat richer will make the mixture risher right across the range.
A better solution would be a needle thinner towards the tip, so richer whe it's wide open.
But I left carb needles behind years ago. someone else can advise you better on choice.

The needles that are fitted are the ones mr Witor recommend.
I'd imagine at best there only a basic setting, a rolling session is required I think to get them bang on.
I would like to fit a 123 dizzy before that happens and at the moment it's way way down on my
things to think about list

I get the same if the carb dashpots are low on oil so the pistons lift too quickly when accelerating so weakening the mixture

one point to look at is make sure the damper ring on the pulley is bonded and the ring has not rotated so tdc is not as marked ,,  it happens.

and i always run sainsbugs 97 no problems filled last week with BP ultimate and   Pinky pinky  very light but its there
under high loads.
thats assuming you actually get whats marked on the pump.

I put some more oil in the carbs, the pinking has reduced considerably.
My herald runs best on Tesco super as opposed to other supers but I tend to use bp in the 2000 for some reason
I think it's because everyone says how bad supermarket fuel is

Ive always been sceptical about differences in fuel and certainly never noticed it in my vehicles. Having seen refineries I find it hard to believe that they produce different stuff for different customers and suspect that what people report is down to varying conditions (environmental, mechanical etc) or even, dare I say it, psychological........
