I’ve revently got my 78 spitfire back from the spray shop and have been working to get it all back together, I have also installed gas struts to try and reduce twist on the bonnet whilst opening.  With these gas struts however, the bonnet opens up a lot more and the hinges on which it opens push against my chrome bumper - which is therefore the point at which it stops.  Is this how the struts are supposed to work?  Obviously the original arm that held the bonnet open didn’t reach any where near far enough for the hinges to come into contact with the chrome bumper.

Also, I have replaced the chrome capping on top of the windscreen as it was really badly scratched.  It has dawned on me that the point on which the hood meets the chrome capping does not have any foam or rubber to prevent scratching or even seal it - is this normal?

Many thanks in advance for your advice in helping me clarify these issues.

The seal is in the hood channel that meets the stainless capping and that stops water and draught and chatter
Where the twist handles locate ,I put some `chrome`finish self adhesive tape(like duck tape) to stop scratching when located. Just replace that every now again to make look OK

I mounted 4 small rubber feet to the rear of the hood front rail(if that makes sense) so it doesn't actually touch the screen frame capping when closed.
I also sourced an alternative rubber strip to seal better than the original item.

isn't the capping anodised aluminium not stainless?

What gas struts did you use. My bonnet does not touch the bumper. It could be the front bonnet hinge needs adjusting upwards or reduce the travel of the arm by moving the mountings.
