Dear all. I bought an an early PI back in December and would be interested to have member's thoughts on changing from mechanical fuel injection to electronic fuel injection. The pro's and con's invloved and the best person to speak to regarding this.
Depends what you are looking to achieve. Perfectly possible to get decent results from PI but programmable FI systems usually include ignition management and barometric correction so you should be able to squeeze very decent mpg out of it and have it behave in the high Alps. Also, if running a non-standard engine it'll be far easier to tune to match.

Hi, I had PI on my Spit/Gt6 2.5. 137MPH on Autobahn. 30's MPG normal driving. Lucas (Prince of darkness), killed my engine.
Now I have EFI (Alpha N) and 20's MPG.
If your PI is running sweet; keep it.
I would not go back to PI as EFI should be better....For me it was not.
Me in Burnley, GB Spitfire 6 EFI Alpha N (Emerald K3 ECU). Big fat 215/40/16's on the backside. (They fit and minimal camber change). (Custom cooling system); broken and going back to OEM, with 20% EG for winter with 2% corrosion inhibitor. LED's all round. NT 5W40 Oil. 0W40 Mobil 1 FS, 3.27 diff with a LSD by Quaife. TR6 Transmission + J Type.

I have just gone from a Lucas PI (with Bosch fuel pump), on a tuned TR6, to Emerald EFI system, with Jenvey throttle bodies, adjustable (in length) trumpets, wide band Lambda probe, 3 way map switch and AFR gauge.
1. Overall better starting - hot and cold. 2. More torque. 3. Better throttle response. 4. Improved MPG. 5. Engine flexibility.
Cons: 1. Cost. 2. Slight loss of character. 3. Slightly less 'meaty' exhaust note (more refined).
In terms of outright power, there is probably little difference in it, but improvement from idle to 6500RPM is noticeable, and engine will feel more energetic. The Lucas system is actually very good AND reliable. I have ran the original, bur rebuilt system for many years on both standard and tuned TR6s.
There are quite a lot of features and adjustments with the Emerald K6 ECU, perhaps like others on the market (like having the ability to have one of the map settings, pop, crackle and produce flames on the overrun I have covered 3000 miles so far, without any issues.

Mick, I race my Vitesse on Lucas Pi, and it satisfies me, if not the timekeepers, but that's me, not the car. Pi is notoriously rich at anything other than full throttle because it goes a bit lean then otherwise, so maybe EFI better economy Tom's better throttle response and flexibility are so subjective - Tom, can you substantiate 'more torque'? Rolling roaded?
And you had better be sitting down when you learn the cost of Jenveys and all the rest of the kit! Bests JOhn
