Hello John,

hammer forming is a good and effective way of shaping panels.

Just a little safety note, the man in the video used a soft hammer to hit the other hammer which is correct. Hitting a steel hammer with another steel hammer carries the risk of splintering shards that could, if you are very unlucky lose you an eye.

Or, ANY 'striking'procedure.

I know of a man who was working alongside another, who was using a bolster and hammer to chase a wiring conduit into a wall.
The top of the bolster had not been ground down recently and a piece split off, hitting him in the eye, penetrating it and blinding him.

Always trim the top of striking tools and WEAR EYE PROTECTION!
Even if you are not doing that particular job!

That's different. The tool wasn't maintained properly and failed.

Didn't Mythbusters or similar test the theory of two hammers fracturing if struck together and found it not to be true?

If in doubt, do up until you hear the crack and then go another 1/4 turn to ensure tightness.

Hi Folks,
           as John pointed out when the top of the chisel/bolster becomes ragged it can become dangerous.

Tidying it up is called dressing.  Similar applies to a grindstone wheel.

There is no reason to have a chisel that is tatty - keep it clean and tidy and it will reward you.

Hello Hogie,

I had a builder doing some work for me and his chisel was really mushroomed, about 180 degrees. I cleaned it up for him and his comment was "I've never heard of anyone doing that"! Totally unaware of the hazard.

Quite amusing how threads can drift. I just thought it would be of interest to add the video to highlight how practical it is for anyone with just the basic hand tools to make quite complex shape repair panels. As has already been mentioned, there's a huge satisfaction in having made a part from scratch as well as the saving on the pocket.

I just thought it would be of interest to add the video to highlight how practical it is for anyone with just the basic hand tools to make quite complex shape repair panels. As has already been mentioned, there's a huge satisfaction in having made a part from scratch as well as the saving in the pocket.

Absolutely right John. I've always regarded threads as chats you might have in the bar at your local pub and one thing leads on to another. And quite often useful points and information is thrown up.
