I know there will be 4A people out there having a laff at this request but it would appear that my brother Phil (a CT member) is in need of a replacement cast exhaust manifold.

He has not managed to check it properly yet because the problem only arose yesterday, and there is a fault with his bonnet catch so he can't open it at the moment, but everything is pointing to a broken cast exhaust manifold.

Yes there is the option of tubular headers but the car is nice and original and it would be nice to stay with an original one.  Obviously he would be looking for an unrepaired one because of the problems about ones that have been weld repaired failing again (as it appears his has) due to stresses created by the welding process unless properly heat stress relieved.

If anyone can help it would be a nice Xmas present for him because his recently acquired 4A has been nothing but a bag of trouble and is driving him to distraction.

Thanks

Ted (or MUT if you follow the Big Six Saloon section!)

Hi Ted,
if the bonnet catch is stuck or cable broken - remove the off-side headlight and bucket and you can see/reach inside (with a pole) to release.

The 4A cast steel manifolds all crack and all in the same place.  This is a gradual process and as the crack grows the gap fills with carbon.
In cracking it relieves itself so you get to a point where it stops cracking and is sealed with carbon.

If yours has been previously repaired then why not get it brazed. There are some fancy brazes out there that will work a treat.

Thanks for the info Roger - I will pass it on to Phil.

When he gets bonnet open he will be able to see what the problem is but the noise being made   suggest a fractured manifold.

Hi Ted,
if undoing the catch through the off-side headlamp is not on then access through the same area will allow the bonnet hinge to be unbolted.
The hinge attachment to the bonnet has three easy to get at screws and one on the side. This side screw should be left off in future.
The hinge is also attached tot he inner wing and may be the part to unscrew.

If necessary, do the same to the near side.

Have now purchased a good second hand cast iron exhaust manifold.
Many thanks to Ted and Hogie for their help and to Hogie especially for tips on how to open the bonnet - I removed both headlights, then slackened the 2 LOWER bonnet hinge bolts each side, gave ait a good waggle and up she popped. Now to align it properly before re-tightening those bonnet hinge bolts but this deserves a separate thread.
Thanks again guys
