spitfire body sag solutions........

Hello again,

I have been offered another spitfire and I am severely tempted. I have really enjoyed doing the work on the one I have and would like to have a bash at restoration.

This one is earlier than my current spit, (1971) and is in a bit of a state, I am ok with most jobs and a very competant welder but there is one thing that puts me off - the dreaded body sag

What is involved in solving this problem? is it just a case of jigging and then new sills, or is there more to it than that? Has anyone on here ever been through this with theirs? and how was it solved?

It would need new sills either way as the existing ones are pretty shot.

Hullo folks, I've recently aquired a 68 Mk 3 Spitfire as a project for my son, Toby, and I to restore. It's his car and he's doing all the work - I'm just helping with stuck bolts and finance!

No doubt we'll be looking for advise from time to time and having browsed the forum for a while, it seems to be a great place for knowledgable enthusiasts to help each other out. We're looking forward to getting out and about in the Spit, the plan being to get it ready in time for Classic Le Mans in 2014.

Space/money and time all being at a premium, we've decided to strip and rebuild the front suspension/brakes/steering, then spin the car around and do the same at the rear. Once it's upright and mobile, we'll get the bodywork sorted out then set to on the engine/clutch/gearbox and once it's tight and true and running, get the paintwork sorted and then finally the interior. The chassis all appears to be in great shape, so no need to remove the tub as far as I can see. Anyone spot any flaws in the plan so far?

Toby has set up a blog to document the work as he progresses, feel free to take a look and post comments to help keep him motivated. http://www.tobysspitfire.blogspot.com/

Cheers all.

Tim & Toby.

Hi can anyone on here, please tell me if they think it is easy enough to change the soft top on a 1500 themselves rather than taking it to be done.
It will come with poppers etc already on it, its a mohair one if that makes any difference . My one is old and has a tear in every window so replacing it but dont really want the added expense of getting it fitted if i could do it myself?? Bear in mind im female so not up to date on all car wordings etc!!
Any advice or help gratefully received

Will be cleaning up the bonnet emblem on my GT6 and am somewhat confused about colors and patterns for the badge.

The badge is blue and white, and I have seen the blue vary in shade from light blue (almost robin's egg) to a medium blue to a dark blue (almost royal).

Are there special shades of blue and white that are to be used? Any definitive source where I could get the colors from?

Thanks

jb

Repairs to the rear valance has begun. The car has been rearended at some time in its life, and the repair has been very crude. Mostly been beaten with a BFH and then touched up with a few pounds of filler.

This is the present condition

The rear valance is being replaced, and this seems like a good opportunity to rectify errors made in the past. The valance is just fitted for trial at the moment.

SO THIS IS WHAT I NEED:

What is the distance from the outer edge of the rear valance to where the roofline ends on the valance? Like this:

Cheers
Nick

Engine strip down

Hi all,
I decided to strip my spare dolomite engine today. I was going to tweek it a bit then swap it with my current standard (leaded) one. I was told it was a good engine from the guy i got the car off however upon stripping the head down it doesnt look so good.

Not to bad you say.....

The head ports were a little rusty but the valves all look Fu*ked. Also all the valve guides had movement sideways. To make matters worse two of the pistons have rusted to the bore. Though this only happened recently so i filled the bores with engine oil and will leave over night. The height of the head was 3.010" Does anyone know what a dolomite 1300 or spitfire 1300 head should be in height so i can find out if its been skimmed. The combustion chambers are quite deep so id think probably not. Here's some more pictures.

So, how easy is it fitting the valve guides(apparently they just tap out?) or is it a job to pay for. As the story goes there was a guy i spoke to today from the CT Wanted section. He needs a dolomite 1300 for his girls car as its blown it motor. So this sprung me into life and the plan was rebuild this one and he can have my old one for cheap. Though it might be worth doing the other head as well as it is leaded as well, you know how some girls can be.Might be safer.

Any thoughts or words of wisdom are very welcome.

Hi all. as the thread suggests the overdrive conversion on the GT6 that all went really well, had a longer test drive today, it was fine for the first 5 miles then took a long while to engage, then a mile or so later wouldn't engage at all.
It's a D type and the electrics all seem fine, the OD is switched thru a toggle switch not the gear knob so shouldn't be anything untoward there.
I'm kind of hoping it just needs the oil topping up, what do we reckon, is that wishful thinking or is it likely to be something more serious?
Thanks,
Floyd.
