hi there.
I purchased a 1968 gt6 several years ago and it has been in storage until recently waiting to be rebuilt. It’s due to come back from my sprayer in primer soon and I have a gearbox issue to get sorted. My question is what gearbox should I have in my 68 gt6?? I’m certain the current gearbox is incorrect as the gear positions don’t match up to the gear levers positions. The gear lever shows the car to have overdrive which also doesn’t work and it jumps out of gear in reverse too. I intend on taking the current box out and replacing it with the correct box as it would have had out of the factory. Please could anyone advise on what exact box I should have and where I could find one??!!
Kind regards pete |

Hi, the correct gearbox with overdrive (it was originally an option) should look like this although in the picture the bellhousing is not installed. Its called a 3 rail gearbox with D type overdrive and reverse can be engaged by moving the lever to the left and pushing it down and forward. These gearboxes have their serial number stamped on the top of the cast iron case on the righthand side and should start with KC (GT6 mk1 & 2), HC (Vitesse) or KE (GT6 mk3) all of which are essentially the same although some internal improvements were made in the latests ones. |

Amazing thank you. As soon as I have it back it will be coming out as it needs a rebuild regardless so I’ll get pics up on here. |

If it does turn out to have another type of gearbox fitted (most likely a single rail possibly with a J type overdrive) dont be in a rush to change it as this is an accepted modification done to improve on the rather weak original. |

Ok great, Thank you for the advice/tips. What should I expect to pay for a gearbox rebuild??!! And any recommendations for someone in the West Sussex area.
Thanks pete |

Quoted from Pedro- Just as an additional note, the Mk2 GT6 should not have an overdrive switch on the gear knob but instead a second stalk behind the indicators. So whether or not you have the correct gearbox, you definitely don't have the correct gear knob (or, indeed, gear stick, as the knob fitting is different). At one point, my GT6 (a Mk3, and therefore with the overdrive switch in the gear knob) had the gear knob cap off a Dolomite Sprint, which showed the wrong position for reverse. It used to confuse the MOT man. I also had, at the time, a Dolomite 1850 with the same gear knob but reverse in yet a third location. So where is reverse on your box?

Quoted from Pedro- We have a local gearbox chap. Works from his home garage, good reputation for all things gearbox. In fact another Pete.... It seems you can't do messages as a non-member on here, but you are very welcome to come along to the local Triumph meeting which is about to move to the Lamb pub at Piltdown, first Wednesday of the month, 8pm onwards (Gearbox Pete is always there early). Happy to discuss the gearbox origins too.

Thanks for all your help guys!!!
From memory (I haven’t driven the car in four years) reverse on my gearbox is across to the left and up. She jumps out of reverse also which suggests maybe a rebuild to me??!! In regard to the gear knob (again from memory as it’s in my friends spray shop and I haven’t seen it in about 12 months) I believe it does have a overdrive switch on the knob. So again this would suggest maybe it’s the correct gearbox in need of a rebuild but currently has the wrong gear knob on!! I’m hoping to have the car back in primer in the next week or so so I’ll get the box out and send over pics and numbers. Maybe then I could contact gearbox Pete and see if he can help out. Im hoping to have it finished for spring/summer time and depending on my finances/space I may have to unfortunately sell it on |
