20/50 is the recommended grade of oil however which brand or type of oil (synthetic, semi and non) to use is a can of worms best not opened😁 |

I'll open the can, but I am wearing a tin hat. For general use, pottering about, a few runs out, etc., I would say use a named mineral "classic" 20/50 oil from the likes of Morris, Castrol, Halfords, Comma etc. For more miles of higher speed cruising, club competitions, long events such as the RBRR/10CR and occasional track days, etc., I would say Valvoline VR1, Millers CS20/50, Millers CSS20/60, Penrite 10tenths 20/60, some of which will be mineral, some semi-synth, some fully synthetic.

I use Penrite 20w60 on the Vitesse but the GT6 gets Millers 20w50 because it's more likely to suffer excessive oil pressure than too low.

I used to use bog standard Halfords 20w/50 but switched to Millers 'Classic Sport' semi-synth 20w/50. It maintains higher pressure when hot, and for longer - the Halfords stuff got cooked too easily and pressure would drop significantly. There is quite a clear difference, although that is reflected in the price! Currently: - Spitfire Mk3 1969: RBRR 2018 - 1300fwd 1967 (Sod's law car. On its 2nd engine and yet everything still goes wrong) Previously: Toledo, MGB GT, Lambrettas & Vespas |
