my 1500 needs some welding around all the jacking points but i need to jack it up on my newly purchased trolley jack. i've never had one before and am not sure where's the best place to lift it. any advice appreciated

For any small chassis Triumph (and probably TR's too!)

Under the chassis crosspiece just behind the differential  - a wood block helps, esp. if you shape it with slight angle and a notch at the front.
Cross piece at the front, just below the radiator and behind the point where the front dumbirons start.
Both lift the entire front or back of the car, which is kinder to the chassis  and suspension.

If you really only what to lift a corner, then:
Front, chassis rail behind the suspension brackets, base of front outrigger.
Back, chassis rail, immediately under the axle.

John, He's got a 1500 Dolly - monocoque and rotten jacking points....

Wellskint, If it's rear wheel drive: To lift up the rear end, best to put your trolley jack under the differential. It's the big circular lump between the rear wheels. This will lift the entire rear of the car. If it's front wheel drive: put your jack under the rear suspension where it joins the bodywork.

For the front end, put your jack under the front suspension arms where they link to the body. You can only lift up one side at a time with this method.

On NO ACCOUNT ever work under the car with just the jack supporting it. Use proper axle stands so that if the jack collapses (and they sometimes do) you will escape without crushed ribs!

I usually jack up at the front on the mounting points for the subframe. I also use axle stands on the subframe once jacked up.

Agree at the back that the best place is under the diff, need to be fairly careful when doing this though as if the jack is not located well on the diff it can easily slip. Once jacked up at the rear use axle stands under the axle tubes on both sides.

If you are taking the axle assembly off the car the only real suitable place for the axle stands at the rear is under the jacking points at the ends of the sills, assuming that the sills are free from rot that is!

One other point always chock up the wheels at the other end of the car to stop the car moving when you jack it up either with suitable wooden blocks (say 4x2) or you can use a good old pair of house bricks like I do...

thanks thats a bit clearer! i dont have any axle stands though - are they universal or do i need triumph specific?

You can use whatever axles stands your local motor factor or Halfords sells.

Plenty on ebay as well.....
