Hi all I have a dolomite 1500 engine in my kit car
What's the rev limit on the engine and can I put a rev limiter on it

Got your brakes sorted then.  :)
You could fit a rev counter from a Spitfire 1500. I can not find any on ebay at the moment but they do come up from time to time. I personally would fit one just because I like to know how much of a hard time I am giving my engine, also good for calculating road speed when the speedo packs in or tells lies.
I would however fit an oil cooler and thermostat as the cooling is rather marginal on the 1500 with anything more than driving like a Granny with cataracts (ask me how I know)   :-/ :B

I was also hoping someone would answer the question about the safe rev limit of a 1500 as I'm wondering if I should be going this way with my car. It would be nice to have the extra torque of the 1500 but as I am limited to about 16.5mph/1000rpm with the FWD gearbox I need something that is happy to sit at 5000rpm for long periods if I'm doing RBRR's and HCR's. Obviously I would have it all balanced before I fitted it.

I don't think many 1500's would be happy at 5000rpm all day.

i would put a soft limiter at 5.5k for a normal engine.

Would be worth checking what the racers expect from their 1500's.

Yogi, I wonder if you might be better with an overbored small crank 1300. Build a screamer rather than a slogger.

Anyone know what a 1300 with 60thou gives?

And is 60thou the max advisable bore?

Hi Colin, yeah, I have a screamer now! It's basically standard but I had it balanced so it's happy at 70 and actually wants to go faster but of course has little low down torque so doesn't like going up hills, which would have been handy with some of the places they sent us on the last HCR! This got me wondering if a 1500 might be the way to go but I think I might be better off trying to get a bit more out of the 1300.

Yogi, I think that a max sustained rpm for a 1500 would be about 4k, even with everything all balanced up nicely.

One of my project 1300's has a over bored 1500 motor (about 1575cc) but it's got the gearing to go with it.

But i have to admit most of the fun of driving a 1300 is the revvy little engine

Hello Gordon, yes I think you're right, the 1300's do sound much nicer, and happier at speed. I think I should probably just try and get a bit more from what I already have. It would be nice to have a bit more torque sometimes, that's all.

1300 all the way for me. My 1500 engine was giving my valve bounce on 2nd gear at the last autosolo - not sure what revs it was doing but it was banging and popping like crazy!

5k tops, but it will let you know well before that it;s not very happy.

The 1500 was a stretch too far.
