If you provide the commission number we should be able to give you a pretty good idea. If you need to know the exact date of manufacture, e.g. in order to determine if the car already enjoys tax free status then you can get a trace done via the Archive Department of the Heritage Motor Centre, Gaydon. |

Hi Tim thank you for your Quick reply the registration date is the 11- 10- 1974 i am not sure if i am entitled to free tax after that date as the car will be 40yrs old this year and i do not know how to go about it so somebody who belongs to this site said somebody on here would know what to do. Hi Colin. As you may know, as from April 1st this year vehicles manufactured before 1st January 1974 became eligible for zero VED and there is now a forty-year rolling exemption. This means that a vehicle manufactured before 1st January 1975 will become tax free from 1st April 2015. Your commission number must be CR 63XX with an "O" suffix to indicate that the vehicle was factory fitted with the optional overdrive. The first CR series TR built in 1974 was CR5613 and the last CR6630 so your number is consistent with a manufacturing date in the second half of that year. In any case you are home and dry since your V5C shows a date of first registration in the UK of 11/10/74, which is before 1/1/75 and the car must have been built before it was registered! Your car therefore becomes tax free as at 1st April 2015. I don't know when your current disc expires but if this date is after 31st March 2015 I don't think you will be eligible for any refund from the date it becomes tax free! As you know, as from tomorrow the tax disc becomes confined to history. When post offices issued tax discs all that would have been necessary would have been for you to amend the taxation class on your V5C to HISTORIC in section 7, sign section 8, visit such a post office after 1/1/15 with the amended V5C, a valid MOT test certificate and certificate of insurance and they would have issued you a zero rate tax disc on the spot and returned your old V5C to Swansea. A new V5C with the amended taxation class would have been sent to you within 4 weeks. now that tax discs are no longer issued you may have to amend the V5C as above and send it to Swansea. I suggest you go on the DVLA website and drop them an email with the query as to the exact procedure. I have always found the DVLA helpful on such matters in the past with prompt replies. |

What is your source Derek? I was relying on the attached from HMRC, which clearly states the effective date for rolling tax exemption of 40+ year-old vehicles is 1st April annually. |
